The story of how Alfred Stieglitz's shifting band of merry ex-pats and homegrown experimenters invented American modernism has been oft and well told, but never with Corn's combination of lucidity, subtlety and clear-eyed sympathy with the workAand the jingoistic America from which it emerged. Corn looks at the work of five American artists, dividing them into the "Transatlantics" and the "Rooted." Like Duchamp and Picabia (who paved the way with "Am?ricanisme"), two other "transatlantics," Gerald Murphy and Joseph Stella, thought that America provided the perfect context for a machine-age art. For Corn, Stella's heroic stylizations of Manhattan's newly built skyscrapers are an attempt to paint through "the European's highly reductive schema of New York," and get at its relentless modernity. The brash flatness of American billboards appears in Murphy's work in Paris, and in that of the "rooted" Demuth, who because of delicate health lived in Pennsylvania. Unlike Demuth, two other "rooted" artists, Corn argues, tried to recover a more historical understanding of what American art wasAGeorgia O'Keeffe looked to a Native American past in New Mexico, and Charles Sheeler incorporated vernacular elements like Shaker furniture into his canvases. Corn matches a terrific sensitivity to form with a winning curiosity about the artists' biographies and nods to period criticism. While a sense of broader social processes shaping artistic production (and the American public) doesn't really come through, Corn's nuanced descriptions of the individual artists, their lives and their materials mirror perfectly their search for "American" modes of expression. I purchased this to help study for the registry. Unfortunately some of the question/answers are out of order. And some of the answers just plain wrong! For instance, SAR, on question 169, is specific absorbtion rate, NOT, susceptibility attack region as the answer states. If this was the only study guide I was using, that type of miss matches would really screw me up. I know that this guide is coming out in print in June 2013, hopefully this will have been caught. If not, buyer beware. Luckily I have been through an MRI course and am not just using this review. If you haven't, please invest in more study materials than just this guide. All in all,this could be much better, however I think it is the editing and not Ms Roth that is at fault. The information is present, it just seems to have gotten a bit jumbled.

This book did help with in my studying for the ARRT MRI registry in January 2017. But it was not my only source for studying. I also used Mrs. Roth's online program which was the biggest help (ImagingEd.com) and I also attended her Registry review program that highlighted info from her online program. She and her crew have done an excellent job of providing my in-depth knowledge for MRI.

Found numerous conflicting answers for questions. I ended up googling to make sure which was correct. I really wish they would at least include a correction sheet for the wrong answers if they aren't going to reprint the book.

I'm on the verge of taking ARRT registry exam..I purchased this book thinking it would help me to prepare, but, it has been more frustrating! I did catch the errors because I have numerous of other material to study from. But, considering how many the questions this book has it's not worth the time to go every single one. Especially, the ones you don't know the answers too. Don't waste your time on purchasing the book, and may I add money.

Very thorough and helpful. I passed my registry exam thanks to this book, but I did find a few errors. I highly recommend using multiple resources for the exam.

Amazing book! I passed my review in October!! It had A LOT of questions so I was only able to go through it twice but the wording of the questions helped me a lot

proofreading it would have been high on my to do list before I published it. if that wasn't enough, flipping from the questions to the back of the book for answers that had no explanations for most, not really a good use of time.

I love these two people who wrote this book but it is full of mistakes, it needs a major proof reading done and those of us who purchased both the book and kindle version should clearly be sent the new updated revision with the correct answers in it. Just sayin!! cause this book is not cheap.update, on further inspection of this book I have to warn you fellow students preparing for boards this book could really hurt your score, it is full of mistakes which is to bad coming from these people, shame on them for not caring enough to proof read the book before selling it. It's pretty much worthless unless you know all the right answers to every question already. Sorry Candi and Bill but just sayin!!

Most books on Star Wars toys / collectibles take on the daunting task of trying to list every single one of them and even more difficult - show them all in nice unopened packages. Mr. Bellomo has bucked the trend, favoring instead to focus on one era and show the toys in their opened state as most people are likely to encounter them.Going one step further, many of the toys which have pieces parts, like playsets, have all of their parts shown, helping collectors identify whether or not the opened toy they are considering buying or already own, is truly complete or if it is missing pieces.Other reviewers are wishing for more 'in package' photos for this title. I personally have fifteen other titles on my bookshelf, all with great photos of mint packaging. However I have zero books that show in detail the complete collection of (US release) loose vintage toys with variations and pieces specifically photographed.Bravo to Mr. Bellomo for choosing to not go with the 'more of the same' and giving collectors a book they don’t already own. The book 'ends' in 1985 - 30 years ago, and yet this the first time we've seen the toys in this light.This book has earned its place on any Star Wars collector's shelf of quality reference books.

Most entries are character information with little more than a few sentences about the figure itself. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and a collector. That's why I bought this book! I don't need a two page spread telling me IG-88's backstory. I want info about the figures. I want more than just a couple bulletpoints listing some variants. I want the pictures which are captioned "Notice the variances in xxxxxxx" to actually be big enough to SEE the variances in whatever is pictured.There's really not anything here that isn't available in the Sansweet books which were published long before this one.

 What a great reference! If you are a vintage Star Wars action figure collector, this is a must have.

OK, my two cents on the new Ultimate Guide to Vintage Star Wars from Mark Bellomo.... -To begin one must realize just HOW MANY different lines and eras of toys do in fact exist. Within each specific line of toys exists literally an entire universe to explore, both in the fiction behind the toys, as well as in the personal history for each of us from our childhoods. Mark has done a wonderful job in covering both a hands down EXPANSIVE list of the Star Wars toys from the original Trilogy as well as illuminating the individual back stories for each character and set that made childhood playtime so great. -The photography and layout are a nice step up in layout and imagination from previous guides, as well as a useful index to speed your journey should you need a quick lookup as well... OR, should you feel like sitting down for a good read one can lose several hours going page by page. -Mr Bellomo went above and beyond in this edition by running down the multitude of variants in existence for many of these toys (very helpful for those who find sport in hunting those individual lines). He has even gone so far as pointing out parts of the toys and sets that after 30+ years may or usually WILL deteriorate, then offering some common and or by default acceptable fixes or replacement parts. Stock or restore? The lines have indeed blurred.... -A note about the author and his various volumes; this edition, like many others has involved years of planning, prep, hunting, writing and more hunting and writing. Mr Bellomo has a personal rule: Nothing goes into his collector editions than he does not own. This means no stock photos, no hearsay, rumor, myth or legends. He has to run down each item you see in this book, ergo it is in its own way self limiting in the amount or type of content. I have seen a few reviews commenting on the lack of packaging or cardback photos. I can attest that those boxes could nearly warrant a companion volume of their own, never mind the space that kind of thing takes up in one's home- a rabbit hole through which only the truly brave should ever consider venturing! In short what you have here is a very complete guide to the actual toys themselves.. -Collecting toys nearly as old as we are (ohai 80's kids!) is a labor of love and a great way to occupy some time, Mr Bellomo really encompasses what it meas love and remember those cool toys and the good times we had with them as children. I very much do recommend this guide as a must for the serious or casual collector and I will look forward to future offerings from Mr Bellomo.Thank You,-CW

I sold my old Star Wars toys some time ago (too much of a pain to keep lugging them around from home to home), and this book lets me reminisce about my favorite childhood possessions without actually having to possess them any longer. Great photos and descriptions of each toy. Clearly a labor of love for the author and not a crass cash-in on someone else's nostalgia. Well done!

This is a must have if you are planning to collect classic Kenner Star Wars toys. It has every figure, ship, and playset catalogged and explained. It explains the different rare variants and the photos are perfect. Do you want to know how much that old Han Solo figure is worth that you just found at the garage sale? This is your guide. The author Mark Bellomo is very creative and you can tell he is a huge fan himself. The guide is very colorfull and fun to read even if you are not a collector. I have a few classic figures but I read the guide to bring back all of those great B-Day and X-Mas memories from my childhood. I also recommend Mr. Bellomo's guide to the classic GI Joe figures of the 80's and 90's.

I bought this copy as a loaner for friends. I truly treasure my copy of "The Accidental Buddhist". For anyone interested in Buddhism or meditation, it's an easy read, full of laughs and very reassuring for one trying to start or restart a meditation practice. Laughing at Moore's experiences with his "monkey mind" and his attempts at being mindful has been very helpful to me as I pursue developing a practice. His survey of the various kinds of Buddhism practice in America takes some of the mystery out of what can appear to be conflicting and confusing instructions. It's a light read and one that I've re-read about every three years, just because I need encouragement and a good laugh.

I read this after reading JW Coleman's much more academic, sociological discussion of "The New Buddhism: the Western Transformation of an Ancient Tradition," (also on Amazon) some months earlier, and thought Dinty Moore's book would've made for a really good "companion, read, a chattier, more casual, and much more personal look at the same phenomenon; the growing popularity of insight meditation, and buddhist philosophy, among affluent, highly educated seekers in the West. While I do wish Mr. Moore's narrative was a bit deeper, he does a nice job of relating the similarities and differences in the practice he found at a major zen temple in NY State, a Theravadan community in West Virginia and Tibetan study group (can't recall where that was at the moment), and the issues raised when he spent time with the publishers of Tricycle Magazine at a big buddhist event in NYC, and with a couple trying to live their lives and run a small business in accord with buddhist ethics. A nice pleasant read for anyone new to the topic at hand.

I'm a little late coming to this book, but I guess they find us just when we need them. And need it I have, and absolutely, so helpful in my own ongoing search for mindfulness and balance. I read it cover to cover in days, most unusual for me, and only wish Professor Moore would write more books, or at least a blog on Buddhism, his adventures into spirituality and mindfulness, and how it has all helped him so many years after the publication of this particular book. The Accidental Buddhist was a delight to read, offering vital concepts without preaching, the perfect balance that made reading it a joy. A deep bow of gratitude to Dinty W. Moore!

Buddhism in America may strike you as a square peg ramming into a round hole, but if that's the case, why has the "religion" attracted so many Americans? Something about our way of life must drive it... something about the fast pace and materialism of our culture must be whetting the appetite of these seekers. Thus, the premise of Dinty Moore's THE ACCIDENTAL BUDDHIST. Though now 10 years old, the book's chronicling of one man's search for Buddhist truth in America still flies because, well, neither America nor certainly Buddhism has changed much.Moore visits monasteries, priests, Buddhist "concerts," retreats, and even individuals in his journey. All of this, of course, is flavored heavily with his own observations and doubts. Brought up a Catholic who was terrorized (in a sense) by his nun teachers in school, Moore wanted a gentler, kinder "God" over the punitive one he had come to know. He especially wanted a belief system that discounts Hell. Thus, Buddhism.As it turns out, the idea and the book itself are a win/win proposition because the answer turns out to be no answer (proving the protean nature of Zen). Yes, Moore's definitions of common Buddhist terms (including a glossary at the end) are instructive, but his frustrations and compromises are even more so. With its sense of humor and self-effacing (Eureka!) manner, THE ACCIDENTAL BUDDHIST is a perfect fit for beginning Buddhists and those simply curious about its precepts alike. We are the book and the book is us, in other words. Enjoy.

Chose this as one of my 2 free books for trying audible. Enjoyed listening to this book. Narrator voice was good, would look for this narrator again. Story was enjoyable and I could easily relate to the main character and what he went thru. I think anyone would enjoy this not just someone exploring or practicing Buddhism. I would recommend this book.

I thought this book was factual, funny and well written. It was an easy read and I finished it quickly. I found it hard to believe it was so old (1997), but still relevant. I wished it covered The New Kadampa Tradition Buddhism, a sect of Tibetan Buddhism that I practice, but maybe it was less prevalent when the book was written. I would love to read more from this author especially if he did a follow-up. I kept thinking this book reads like a documentary one would find on Netflix or something. All in all I am glad I made this a part of my library.
